These Castroviejo Suture Cutting and Removal Scissors are designed for controlled suture cutting in dental, periodontal and oral surgical procedures.
Unlike general-purpose Castroviejo scissors, each version features a specialized working tip developed for a specific stage of suture removal. Choose the Cut-and-Retain Tip for cutting and retrieving the severed thread, or the Tissue-Protective Tip for close-to-tissue suture cutting.
Why This Is Not an Ordinary Castroviejo Scissor
Standard Castroviejo scissors are generally designed for fine tissue or suture cutting. Conventional stitch scissors may include a small hook or notch that lifts the suture before it is cut.
This instrument offers two purpose-specific configurations:
- Type I cuts and retains the severed suture for removal with the same instrument.
- Type II provides a smooth tissue-facing surface for positioning beneath the suture during close-to-tissue cutting.
The angled working end and spring-action handle support controlled access in confined treatment areas.
Type I — Cut-and-Retain Tip
Type I combines suture cutting and retrieval in one instrument.
After the suture is cut, the specialized working tip helps retain the severed thread so it can be lifted and removed without immediately changing to a separate pair of forceps.
Key Advantages
- Cuts and retains the severed suture
- Allows thread removal with the same instrument
- Reduces the need to alternate immediately between scissors and forceps
- Angled tip supports access to confined treatment areas
- Suitable for controlled postoperative suture removal
Type II — Tissue-Protective Tip
Type II is designed for cutting sutures close to the tissue surface.
Its smooth tissue-facing working end can be positioned beneath the suture. This helps limit direct contact between the sharp cutting edge and the surrounding soft tissue during cutting.
Key Advantages
- Smooth tissue-facing working end
- Designed for close-to-tissue suture cutting
- Helps separate the cutting edge from surrounding soft tissue
- Angled profile supports intraoral access
- Spring-action handle provides responsive opening and closing
Applications
- Dental implant postoperative suture removal
- Periodontal procedures
- Oral surgery
- Bone augmentation postoperative care
- Controlled cutting and removal of fine sutures
